Physics with new advanced coherent radiation sources
The Graduiertenkolleg "Physics with new advanced coherent light sources" is dedicated to the development, characterization and application of modern sources for light and matter waves. It combines the expertise of physicists from the fields of laser physics, quantum optics, x-ray physics, accelerator physics and ultra-short pulse physics in order to study the joint and complementary aspects of systems like fibre lasers, crystalline wave guide lasers, fs-lasers, free-electron-lasers in the VUV and x-ray regime as well as synchrotron radiation and coherent matter waves.
The strategic goal is to train PhD students in the modern fields of laser physics and especially to combine thereby the know-how of scientists working in the different fields of laser science mentioned above. Research in the Graduiertenkolleg is complemented by a specific training course programme that concentrates in particular on the transfer of basic and advanced knowledge of all the above subfields. As an important aspect, scientists from the ‚Photon Science’ at DESY contribute to the research and study programme of the Graduiertenkolleg. In addition the worldwide unique possibilities of the DESY VUV-FEL ‚FLASH’ and the DESY synchrotron radiation source ‘PETRA III’ are accessible to the Graduiertenkolleg. In this manner, the Graduiertenkolleg is intended to be an example of how university and non-university research can go hand in hand.
