The finished building in July 2011

The research campus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld of the University of Hamburg has been  extended by a new building - the Center for Optical Quantum Technologies.

The foundation stone has been laid on August 21st, 2009 by the Secretary for Sciences and Research of Hamburg, Dr. Herlind Gundelach and the acting President of the University of Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Löschper. On June 10, 2010, the people involved in the construction and the research group housed in the building in the future could celebrate the roofing ceremony together with  Dr. Herlind Gundelach and the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Dieter Lenzen. On April 24, 2011, the keys have been officially handed over to the users.

The 1280m2 large building consists of eight state-of-the-art research laboratories, specially designed and optimized for quantum-gas and laser physics, office space and open areas, which shall invite the 60-80 researchers to extensive and creative discussions.

Filling the center with life

In the beginning of July 2011, the laboratories have been finished and equipped with optical tables. The first experiments have been moved into the building and only few weeks after its opening, the building is filled with life.
